According to the Institute for Risk Management, contractors should have a written Quality Management Program. As IRM notes, “A contractor must have a robust quality management program as it is critical to the overall success of a construction project.” An effective Contractor Quality Management (CQM) program:

- creates a process for clarifying standards and requirements
- establishes means and methods for managing the process
- defines responsibilities and accountabilities
- adds an avenue to more effectively manage the supply chain
- reduces misunderstanding and potential conflict

CQM programs are required for certain government work, such as Army Corp. of Engineers projects, and are also required by a growing number of private owners. In order to qualify for a ABC Accredited Quality Contractor status, a CQM program is required. ABC recommends members acquire this credential to improve their operations and ability to qualify for work.

ABC’s Gould Construction Institute is holding a one-day workshop entitled Construction Quality Management for Contractors on Nov. 15 at the ABC/GCI Office in Woburn. Details are below:

WHAT IS CQM?
Construction Quality Management (CQM) for Contractors is the performance of tasks that ensure that construction is performed according to plans and specifications, on time, within a defined budget, and in a safe work environment.

WHY ATTEND?
The CQM certification is required for Army Corps of Engineers and Navy construction contracts. This course provides training on the CQM concepts and procedures used in Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Army Corps of Engineers construction contracts. These concepts fit perfectly with commercial construction work, taking CQM down to the working level and familiarizing participants with the importance of all parts of the contract: safety, quality, environmental, etc.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course must be taken and passed by any contractor selected to do work for the Army Corps or NAVFAC. Attendees who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate that is required by Army Corps and Navy construction contracts. The certificate is valid for 5 years. CQM can be applied successfully to private-sector work. All managers in charge of quality at both general and sub-contractor companies will benefit from this course.
