February Chairman's Message

Much has changed for the Massachusetts construction industry over the past decade, and I’m happy to report that most of the change has been for the better.The latest and one of the most important examples came in January when the Baker-Polito administration announced its Career Technical Initiative, which will train an additional 20,000 skilled trade workers over the next four years and help close the skills gap, which has become the top priority for both ABC and the construction industry as a whole.The initiative calls for vocational-technical schools to operate three teaching shifts per day. Vocational students will take classes from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, students from area high schools will take classes from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, and 5:00 to 9:00 pm will be reserved for training adults. Among other things, the initiative will:• Provide adults with assistance to pay for their training• Boost business involvement in program development and credentials• Reduce licensure barriers to provide incentives for mid-career ...

Connolly Brothers Completes Headquarters for W. L. French

BEVERLY, Mass. – February 19, 2020– Connolly Brothers Inc, a general contractor and construction management firm, announced today it has completed a new 60,000 SF corporate office and maintenance facility for W. L. French Excavating Corp. in Billerica, Mass.The 48,000 SF maintenance facility includes 10 drive-through maintenance bays, three high equipment bays with five-ton and 10-ton overhead cranes, truck tire carousel, diesel filter cleaning system, truck and heavy equipment wash bay, parts storage and service management offices. The 12,000 SF office building features a fitness center, meeting spaces, and collaborative workspaces for W. L. French’s 250 employees. It was designed to promote health, wellness and productivity in the workplace. Electrical Code Review Will be Added to MA Journeyman Electrical Licensing beginning in 2022

All electrical contractors and apprentices are advised that Massachusetts is in the process of adding a 15-hour electrical code review requirement to electricians’ licensing. The Board of State Examiners of Electricians has approved a regulatory change that calls for applicants for journeyman’s license to certify they have taken 15 hours of continuing education, in addition to current requirements for education and work experience. Code review is currently requirement for license renewals, but not for initial journeyman’s licensing. According to the Division of Professional Licensure (DPL), the code review will be required for applicants beginning in 2022, and based on the 2020 code. DPL says once the official version of the new regulations is released, it will begin public notification of the requirement, including posting on the state website. Erland Construction Receives Bronze Award by the Design-Build Institute of America New England Region
