The 3rd annual Contractors Children's Fund Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, September 29, 2017 at Blissful Meadows, a beautiful 18-hole championship golf course located in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Not only will you enjoy a great day of golf but you'll be supporting a great cause - and this year, a pair tickets to a New England Patriots game will be raffled off!
The Children's Fund provides scholarships for children who lost one or both parents at an early age. Money raised from the tournament will be used to provide two (2) $2,500 scholarships for graduating students who experienced the loss of a parent. Brian Renaud, a longtime ABC MA member and New England Sales Director for The Contractors Plan, created the Contractors Children's Fund to help local children receive an education.
Last week, ABC MA hosted the first installment of the Rethink Safety Seminar Series titled Super/Foreman Safety 101. Milt Jacobs, President of Safety Solution Consultants Inc. (SSCI), led the seminar while engaging the attendees in a personable conversation about his experience with safety in the construction industry. Milt was joined by Rob Zak, a former construction superintendent of 20-plus years, who also engaged attendees in a conversation regarding real-world threats on the jobsite while answering all questions that were posed by those in attendance. ABC MA has paired with SSCI to host quarterly events for our Rethink Safety Series, so stay tuned for more information regarding the next seminar coming this winter. We would like to thank all of you that attended and Milt Jacobs, and Rob Zak for making this event possible.
Last Tuesday, August 29th, Governor Baker joined ABC's Future Leaders group and The Haynes Group at their newly opened headquarters located in West Bridgewater, MA. The Haynes Group's new office is a perfect blend of open-space concept with employee perks, such as a bar and ping pong table, promoting a congenial atmosphere for collaboration and relationship-building. Governor Baker worked the packed room, taking time to personally speak with just about everyone that attended. ABC Chairman Joe Barbone and The Haynes Group's CEO Mike Haynes introduced the Governor, who spoke to the attendees about workforce development in the construction industry and then fielded a number of audience questions.
We would like to thank The Haynes Group for hosting the event everyone that attended. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
Who is Ari "Danger"?
Ari was an inspiring 5-year old from Stow, MA who was born with a heart defect. He recently endured a heart transplant which his body rejected, thereby shutting down his immune system. His body fought hard to adjust to his new hear. During this time, the family discovered their house had black mold, so it was torn down to be rebuilt in order for Ari to return home.
The saddest news came July 21st when his family announced that Ari had passed away. Ari "Danger" Schultz had touched the hearts of thousands of people.
What is Ari "Danger" Day?
This fundraising event is an afternoon of music, activities, food and drink to celebrate Ari's life and help relieve some of the exorbitant costs that his family faces. This is a fully supported event and all proceeds go directly to the Shultz family.

Last Thursday, ABC MA and the Gould Construction Institute honored this year’s Safety, Training, and Evaluation Process (S.T.E.P.) award recipients at the 13th annual ABC/GCI Safety & Education Dinner held at Montvale Plaza in Stoneham, MA.
The Safety & Education Dinner is ABC/GCI’s premier event, celebrating our member companies’ commitment to worker safety and training, the talented instructors dedicated to educating the next generation of industry leaders, and the students working long hours during the day and attending classes at night to improve their knowledge and skills. “This is a night to recognize our students and their employers who continue to raise the standards of safety, training, and education in the construction industry,” commented GCI President Barbara Lagergren.
The S.T.E.P. Awards were the highlight of the evening. This year, a record 60 ABC member companies were recognized for having an outstanding commitment to jobsite safety. “By drawing attention to the importance of jobsite safety we make sure that it is not taken for granted,” Lagergren said. “The bottom line is that we are nothing without safe, healthy workers.”
Last week, over 40 ABC members representing 34 different member companies gathered in Woburn for a seminar on prevailing wage in public works presented by representatives from the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) and the Department of Labor Standards (DLS). We were joined by John Ronan, General Counsel of the Department of Labor Standards, as well as Heather Rowe, Lauren Goldman, and Brian O’Donnell from the Massachusetts’ Attorney General’s Office. The program featured an overview of how DLS sets prevailing wages, AGO enforcement of prevailing wage laws, and concluded with an open forum allowing those in attendance to ask both the AGO and DLS any pressing questions. This was a great event for ABC MA members, providing the opportunity to meet and interact with members of state agencies that regulate their day-to-day business operations.
We’d like to make a special thanks to the Attorney General's Office and Department of Labor Standards for taking the time to join us, and also thank all that attended and our generous sponsors that made the event possible - ABC Insurance Trust, Metro Walls Inc., and New England Fiberglass Windows.

On Wednesday, April 12th, ABC MA members met with several recently elected legislators or newly appointed committee chairs to introduce legislators to our organization and members, discuss construction industry issues, and explain the resources and opportunities our organization can provide to their district and constituents. Chairman Joe Barbone discussed the many benefits ABC as an organization provides to members and member companies provide to their employees. ABC's Merit Apprenticeship Program (MAP) Director, Morisset St. Preux, discussed the on-the-training opportunities offered by MAP, and Gould Construction Institute's President Barbara Lagergren explained the quality apprenticeship, craft and management training GCI offers to the entire construction industry. Chairman Barbone also shared ABC's priority issues, safety and workforce development, and the need for legislators to engage themselves in order for the industry to make significant progress.
Thank you to all legislators and ABC members that attended this great event. This type of grassroots engagement is the foundation of our political efforts. If you would like to get involved in our efforts please contact Rob McGovern at Rob@abcma.org.
