On Wednesday, November 28th, over 70 ABC members and Autodesk BUILDers-in-Residence gathered at the Autodesk BUILD Space in Boston's Seaport to enjoy an evening of live demonstrations of state-of-the-art technology from some of Boston’s most promising start-up companies and higher educational institutions. Autodesk can help ABC contractors explore new opportunities through Building Information Modeling (BIM), 3D design and visualization, as well as other technologies not yet on the market. While getting a glimpse into the job site of the future, those in attendance got the pleasure of meeting with BUILDers-in-Residence such as ManufactOn, Lumii, AI Space Factory, NBBJ, LuxMea, and Good Clancy.

ABC MA’s Future Leaders group provides an opportunity for the rising stars of our industry to learn, develop, and network among their peers. To that end, I am humbled that the Future Leaders have selected me to sit as their chairperson for the second year in a row. Over the last three years, this group has gained momentum, moving forward with educational seminars and gatherings for personal and professional growth that improve our standing in the construction industry.
Beginning this year, ABC MA designated the Future Leaders with an ex officio seat on the Board of Directors, to which I was appointed, so we could provide the Board with insight and influence from our perspective. This achievement alone is an example of what we stand for, growth through active participation.
While we continue to collaborate with and be supported by industry leaders within the ABC member network, it is important that managers and leaders of our companies stress the importance of professional growth through education, networking and relationship building. There is a common misconception that networking events are solely attended by pushy sales people. While this can be true for some, most events are attended by those who value and understand the importance of relationship building and are very welcoming.
We are pleased to announce that applications for ABC MA's 2018 Building Our Future Scholarship are now available! The scholarship is open to students who are:
Applications for 2018 are due on April 6, 2018
The Building Our Future Scholarship was established by the ABC MA Board of Directors to develop future talent for the construction industry by providing financial assistance to worthy candidates pursuing a post secondary education in construction.
Funds for the scholarship were raised in the name of the outstanding leaders of ABC MA who have been inducted by the Board of Directors as ABC Legends. In 2015, 26 past chapter chairs were inducted as the ABC Legends, in 2016 Leon Asadoorian joined the esteemed group, and this past year long-time ABC MA member Warren Hudson was inducted.
Applications are due on April 6, 2018 and scholarships will be presented at this year's ABC/GCI Safety and Training Night.
We thank all those members who have donated to the scholarship. They have both honored our past and current leaders and paved the way for the leaders of tomorrow.
Last year, Evan Hall of Methuen Construction was one of the first recipients of the Building Our Future Scholarship. The $2,000 helped earn his degree in construction management from Wentworth College. Read all about it here...
Last Tuesday, August 29th, Governor Baker joined ABC's Future Leaders group and The Haynes Group at their newly opened headquarters located in West Bridgewater, MA. The Haynes Group's new office is a perfect blend of open-space concept with employee perks, such as a bar and ping pong table, promoting a congenial atmosphere for collaboration and relationship-building. Governor Baker worked the packed room, taking time to personally speak with just about everyone that attended. ABC Chairman Joe Barbone and The Haynes Group's CEO Mike Haynes introduced the Governor, who spoke to the attendees about workforce development in the construction industry and then fielded a number of audience questions.
We would like to thank The Haynes Group for hosting the event everyone that attended. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
Last month I had the privilege of speaking at an ABC Future Leaders event. And as beautiful as the views were from Marina Bay in Quincy, the people I met were even more impressive.
The Future Leaders Group engages young employees working at all levels of member companies to make them aware of what ABC offers, help them advance professionally and groom the generation that will eventually lead our organization and help bring it to new levels of success. Many members don’t realize that benefits and opportunities extend to all employees of ABC member companies, not just company leadership.
Also speaking that evening was Brian Jurgens, one of my predecessors as chair of the Massachusetts chapter, who was among the founders of the group, which was originally known as the Young Leaders. Brian spoke about the networking opportunities the Young Leaders opened to him, and how that helped him build up the network of clients for his painting company, W.T. Kenney.
After being revamped and renamed in 2016, the ABC Future Leaders have grown and become more involved in the activities of ABC. Consisting of a 10-person board with Tiffani Tartaglia of Resource Options, Inc. acting as chair of the organization, it is run with input from ABC Membership Director Ken Ledwak. The Future Leaders provides information about training, apprenticeship, and offers employees rising through the construction industry with vibrant networking opportunities, all while promoting the merit shop philosophy and preparing dynamic young people to lead our organization.
But no description can match the experience of meeting and getting to talk with some of the finest young employees ABC member companies have to offer. If you think you or someone in your company could benefit from this group, contact Ken Ledwak at firstname.lastname@example.org or (781) 273-0123.
By Tiffani Tartaglia, 2017 ABC MA Future Leaders Chair
We are just two months into the year 2017 and the ABC Future Leaders group is already in full swing. Thank you to everyone who came out to our kick off event of the year - “Technology in Construction: The Future is Now.” The turnout was one of our best.
I have been given the opportunity to serve as the chairperson of the Future Leaders. I have been a part of the Future Leaders for two years, and in those two years I have seen the committee grow and develop from a thought to an action. Over the next year, we plan to continue our progress and grow the Future Leaders network.
