Working Group on Wage Theft Legislation Set to Hold First Meeting

ABC will be participating in the first meeting of a new Working Group on Wage Theft Legislation this week.  The group will be led by State Representative Josh Cutler, House Labor and Workforce Committee Chairman.  It will include construction and business representative as well as unions and community groups that are advocating for the legislation.     ABC is part of a board construction and business coalition that opposes the current version of wage theft legislation as being unfair to the state’s businesses, the vast majority of which do not commit wage theft.  The legislation proposes joint and several liability that seeks to hold businesses liable for any wage law violations committed by businesses they hire.    In a message to those participating in the new working group, Rep. Cutler said, “While there may not be agreement on the specific solutions, I was heartened to see a consensus on the broader issue. Clearly all ...

ABC Testifies on Several Public Safety Bills

ABC MA provided testimony to the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee last week on several bills dealing with the building code, building materials and fire safety.   ABC testified in support of House Bill 2537, An Act Relative to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards and Senate Bill 1554, An Act Implementing the Recommendations of the Walsh-Kennedy Commission Report, and in opposition to Senate Bill 1589, An Act Relative to Safe Building Materials.   ABC supports House Bill 2537 as it seeks to limit the adoption of “local option” codes that will result in a fragmented statewide framework and confusion in the building and regulatory process. For contractors, dealing with different local requirements is challenging, as construction is subject to considerable government oversight and regulation. The prospect of different code requirements from one municipality to the next is extremely challenging for contractors and adds tim ...

TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 2021 9:50 AM Posted in Construction Backlog Indicator, Construction Economic Update, Construction Confidence Index, News Release 2021 WASHINGTON, June 15— Associated Builders and Contractors reports today that its Construction Backlog Indicator rose to 8.0 months in May, according to an ABC member survey conducted from May 20 to June 2, 0.1 months higher than in April 2021 and May 2020. While ABC’s Construction Confidence Index readings for sales increased modestly in May, confidence regarding profit margins and staffing levels slipped. All three indices remain above the threshold of 50, indicating expectations of growth over the next six months. “Nonresidential construction backlog continues to edge higher, consistent with expectations that sales, profit margins and staffing will expand over the next six months,” said ABC chief economist Anirban Basu. “For at least four reasons, this represents an extraordinary set o ...
