COVID-19 Update on School Classes and Trainings

Good afternoon,

We appreciate everyone’s patience during these challenging times and we know the uncertainties are frustrating for all. Be assured, our goal is to continue to meet the educational and training needs of our students and our customers. As we continue to work on solutions for alternative training, please realize that this is new uncharted territory for all of us and we are learning as we go. This pandemic is fluid, therefore; changes and updates will continue to occur and we may have to make adjustments along the way. We will do our best to keep you informed.

GCI Remaining School Classes

The Governor announced yesterday that schools will remain closed for the remainder of this year. The possibility of GCI resuming in person apprenticeship trade classes is not looking too promising. To help our students complete the remainder of this school year, we will now resume our existing classes with virtual online instruction only.

As of April 21st, the Electrical Board adopted a revised online training guideline and removed the requirement that an apprentice must have 75 hours or less until the completion of their program to sit for their licensing exam in order to be eligible for virtual online class instruction. This change will now allow us to offer our other level electrical classes virtually.

Virtual classes for seven of our classes have been scheduled and started this week. We will be adding more classes in the next few days and sending registration information to currently enrolled students so they can complete the remainder of this year.

Correspondence Training

The next Correspondence testing dates for May have been cancelled. Until the state of emergency is lifted, we will not be able to schedule test dates. The team is working on alternative solutions to allow correspondence students to test online from the safety of their homes and more information will be shared soon.

License Prep, Career Development Trainings

In place of class room trainings, the GCI team is working on developing virtual trainings for license prep, Hot Work, and other safety classes.

Online career development training classes are still available through our partnerships with:
Penn Foster: Resources can be found HERE.
Wentworth Institute of Technology: Resources can be found HERE

ABC is offering construction industry related webinars weekly. More information can be found HERE

If there is a particular training that you are interested in providing your employees, please contact Diane Craven, Education Director. We will work with our partners to see if we can provide online training program options to help keep your employees engaged and learning while social distancing.

Safety & Education Night, originally to be held on Thursday, May 21, 2020 has been rescheduled and will now merge with the Excellence in Construction Awards on Thursday October 29, 2020. More information will follow from ABC/MA and GCI.
