All electrical contractors and apprentices are advised that Massachusetts is in the process of adding a 15-hour electrical code review requirement to electricians’ licensing. The Board of State Examiners of Electricians has approved a regulatory change that calls for applicants for journeyman’s license to certify they have taken 15 hours of continuing education, in addition to current requirements for education and work experience. Code review is currently requirement for license renewals, but not for initial journeyman’s licensing. According to the Division of Professional Licensure (DPL), the code review will be required for applicants beginning in 2022, and based on the 2020 code. DPL says once the official version of the new regulations is released, it will begin public notification of the requirement, including posting on the state website. The license application will be revised to include the 15-hour code review requirement in advance of it taking effect in 2022. ABC will keep members apprised of additional related developments.

UPDATE: 

The Electrical Board confirmed that the 237 CMR 13 has been updated effective 2/7 stating all Apprentices applying to sit for the exam will need the 15 hr. CE from the current code cycle adopted at time of when they take their exam.  The Board set a date of March 31 as a deadline for this additional Educational requirement and will start rejecting applications that do not have the 15 hr. CE completion certificate. 

If someone sits for exam from now and before 3/31, the state will not reject the application to sit for test but that apprentice will need to take the 15 hr. CE before next code cycle
