Woman Struck by Falling Guardrail in North End of Boston

A young woman walking her dog was critically injured last Thursday, July 25, after being struck by a guardrail that fell off the roof of a five-story construction site in the North End of Boston. A crane was lifting materials when it pushed the railing over the edge. The woman was struck in the head while walking down an uncovered sidewalk, and taken to the hospital in stable but critical condition.
Corolla Contracting, based in Winthrop, had a permit to replace a rubber roof at 47 Commercial Wharf East. Officials found Corolla to have violated the permit by also removing a deck. According to The Boston Globe, Corolla Contracting has been cited for 8 safety violations since 2010. (Boston Globe July 2019).
Tragic accidents like this are why ABC makes clear to our members that safety must always be a priority given the inherent dangers of construction work. Our thoughts are with the injured woman as we wish her a full and speedy recovery, and we remind our members to be careful on all worksites for the safety of employees and the public.
